A seasonal guide to swimming in the Adriatic

Published May 26, 2026 · ~5 min read

Through the summer the Adriatic is one of the warmest and cleanest bathing areas in the Mediterranean. If you are planning to swim, it helps to know when the season begins, how the sea warms up across the months, and when water quality is most dependable. Here is a short guide.

When the season runs

The bathing season on the Croatian coast runs roughly from mid-May to the end of September. During this period the competent institutions sample the sea regularly and publish quality grades. Outside those bounds no measurements are taken, so Tirkiz shows the last available seasonal grade.

Sea temperature through the season

In May the sea is still cool, usually around 18 to 20 °C, and more pleasant in shallow, sheltered coves. Through June the temperature rises, peaking in July and August, when along most of the coast it sits between 24 and 27 °C. September stays warm because the sea cools slowly, so swimming is often pleasant into early autumn.

How quality changes over summer

Sea quality in the Adriatic is generally excellent during the season. Temporary deviations are most common after heavy rain, when stormwater outflows and torrents can briefly raise bacteria levels close to shore, especially near river mouths and in enclosed harbours. Such conditions usually return to normal within a few sunny days.

The best time to visit

For the warmest sea, choose July and August; for quieter beaches and lower air temperatures, June and September. If water quality matters to you, avoid swimming immediately after strong summer downpours, especially in town harbours and near river mouths.

Outside the season

From October to May there are usually no new samples. Tirkiz then shows the last seasonal grade and clearly marks that the bathing season is not active, along with the expected start of the next one.
